Shorties

Here are some diaper cover shorties I made last week. These go over your fitted cloth diapers to act as a waterproof cover. You can make them very quickly and as simple or fancy as you want!
All you need is some fleece (on the left-action shots are tough with a mobile 9 month old) or a wool sweater (the lime green shorties below are cashmere), this pattern (Katrina Longies), and a sewing machine. Cut out your pattern, tape it together, then cut out your fabric (2 pieces) using the pattern. Sew it at the hem, leg seams, crotch, and waist and you're done!
If you want to add the stripes on the side (below) just take your 2 cut out pieces of fabric, lay them on top of each other, then cut straight down the middle (which will actually become the sides of the shorts).  Sew your stripe fabric to both pieces to make one continuous piece again, then repeat on the 2nd piece.  Then proceed as you would putting the shorts together. I don't alter the fabric (cut it to make it smaller) since i've added more to it, they just are a little bigger in the leg.

I like these for the spring/summer because he can get them dirty, and they just go in the wash with whatever load is going at the time. I don't have to wait until I wash diapers every 3~4 days. I also made a shirt that matches the dot shorties. Just get a solid shirt and sew on a patch of material that matches the shorties. Zig zag the edges around your patch, done! Now you have an outfit in less than 1 hour.
Even if you don't cloth diaper, these make great play shorts.  You can also make these into pants, just cut longer in the leg length.  Add a lettuce edge instead of a hem for a more girly look.  Just serge the edge of the fabric, but as you do this, pull out your material so the edge stretches and looks wavy.
The green cashmere shorties are inside out to show you how the seams look on the inside.  Just follow the directions for the pattern above (the Katrina Longies) and they will turn out great!
Happy sewing!
